Volunteers shuck ears of corn in preparation for the famous West Point, Iowa Sweet Corn Festival that immediately follows the Shuck Fest.
How much corn are we talking about? Records were kept in 2009 and 2010, and so there is a general answer to this question. About 18 tons of sweet corn is trucked in for this annual event – that’s about 45,000 ears of free sweet corn to be eaten. Believe it or not, avid local volunteers typically shuck all that corn within an hour and a half! They shuck 600 to 700+ ears a minute.
This community event also involves providing food and beverages for the shuckers along with corn clean-up.
Shuck Fest usually already has plenty of volunteers, but if interested, you can volunteer simply by showing up at the date, time, and location listed above. Also, keep an eye on this page for updates.
